about
Pianist and educator David Burge taught at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester during the 1970s, and in 1978 he received a grant to judge a contest devoted to unpublished piano music by composers from North America. At the time, Burge also wrote a monthly column for Contemporary Keyboard magazine devoted to 20th century piano music, and he wrote about several of the contest winners in the magazine. Nocturne 1974 was one of the pieces that was awarded notice. Its composer, James Woodard (d. 2004) taught in the Theory and Composition Departments at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. In May 1979, Burge wrote, "Nocturne 1974 is unique not only in its adherence to traditional melodic and harmonic characteristics and formal procedures, but in the manner in which the composer is able to make an older style convincingly his own. Beginning with a key signature (a rarity these days!) of five flats, he writes in a somewhat Chopinesque melody-accompaniment format that is gratifying pianistically and beautiful to listen to."
These almost heartbreakingly gentle felted piano compositions have the delicacy and loveliness of slow-falling snow. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 30, 2023
This elegantly composed chamber album from Ellen Tsai has a playful feel, almost like the soundtrack to a storybook. Bandcamp New & Notable Aug 23, 2022
